The Chicago suburb of Oak Park, Ill. has raised the minimum age to purchase tobacco in its village from 18 to 21. Under the new rule—which passed unanimously—it will be illegal to sell tobacco to anyone under the age of 21, it will be illegal for anyone under the age of 21 to sell tobacco products and it will increase the fine for selling tobacco to those deemed underage from 18 to 21. The new law will go into effect on Aug. 1, 2017. Oak Park is located on the western edge of Chicago, less than 10 miles from city center. It has a population of around 50,000. Earlier this year, Chicago passed a law that also increased the minimum age to purchase tobacco to 21 within city limits.
