The Peabody Board of Health will vote this Thursday, Aug. 27, on a proposal that would increase the minimum age to purchase tobacco products in the town of some 52,000 residents. If approved, Peabody would join 72 other cities and towns in the state to increase the age to 21. There has been a city-by-city push to raise the age led by Drs. Lester Hartman and Jonathan Winickoff, part of which has come in response to the matter not being taken up by the state legislature. The change would go into effect 120 days following the passage, according to the proposal’s text. Peabody is located 13 miles northeast of Boston.
