The Ogle County Board  in northern Illinois has rejected a proposal that would have required tobacco retailers to obtain a secondary license to do business in their jurisdiction. The board voted 13-9 against the idea, with two members absent. Had it have passed, retailers would have had to pay $100 annually for the license, with the money used to fund compliance checks to ensure that retailers aren’t selling to minors. Only one city in the county, Byron, currently has an additional license required for tobacco retailers, according to OgleCountyNews.com. The state of Illinois currently does not require a separate license to sell tobacco products, though that will change on Jan. 1, 2016 when the state will require retailers to obtain a license for $75 per year.
