The Huntington Town Council has announced plans to look into a potential smoking ban for its eight beaches, as Councilman Mark Cuthbertson is sponsoring a resolution that was to be introduced at Tuesday night’s meeting, with a public hearing to be scheduled for the coming weeks. While a formal announcement for the public hearing has not been made, Huntington town spokesman A.J. Carter told Newsday that it would likely be held during the August 19 town board meeting. As it stands now, the ban would prevent people from using tobacco products on the beach proper, but would allow smoking in parking lots, in effect creating designated smoking areas. Details such as fines, enforcement procedures and when the ordinance would go into effect have not yet been announced. Huntington is home to more than 200,000 residents in northwestern Suffolk County on Long Island.
