Last Friday, the New Jersey Senate voted on a proposed ban on beach smoking, but resolved little. The Senate voted in favor of allowing municipalities to establish civil fines for smoking on beaches, something currently forbidden in the Commonwealth, however, it delayed a vote regarding whether it would ban smoking on beaches. Earlier this year, the state Assembly voted in favor of A1080, which banned smoking on all public parks and beaches in the state. If the Senate had voted on a smoking ban it would have been on an amended bill that would have allowed municipalities to designate up to 20 percent of beaches for a smoking ban.
