Voters in St. Joseph, Mo. will decide whether or not to enact a smoking ban when they go to the polls today after the city council put the task of making their decision in their hands earlier this year. With the smoking ban becoming a hot button issue, as well as the mayor, several city council seats and a municipal judge position up for grabs, some are predicting that turnout for the election should be above average, according to NewsPressNow.com. There are also a pair of seats on the city’s school board open. The question that will be posed on the ballot reads “Shall the City of St. Joseph, Missouri, Code of Ordinances, Chapter 17, entitled ‘Health and Sanitation,’ be amended for the main purpose of adding a new Article XI entitled ‘Smoke-Free Indoor Air Workplaces and Public Places’?” The full text of the proposal will be available at all polling locations. Should voters pass the ban, it will take effect in all public places as of June 7. Smoking will still be allowed on the floor of the St. Jo Frontier Casino, in 10 percent of hotel rooms and in private clubs, but only when employees are not present.
