A new smoking ban is coming to parks in Bangor, Maine, despite critics saying it didn’t go far enough in snuffing out tobacco use in the city. On Monday night, the council approved a ban on smoking and the use of e-cigarettes in public parks that have amenities intended to be used by minors, such as pools, playgrounds, and athletic facilities, a move geared to limit children’s exposure to both smoke and tobacco use. With this specific definition, twelve of the city’s approximately 40 parks will be subject to the ban, but Bangor’s golf course will be one area that won’t be subject to the new law. A proposal to include all city parks in the ban was defeated by a 4-5 vote. The proposal passed by an 8-1 vote. Bangor is home to an estimated 33,039 residents, while the larger Bangor metropolitan area has a population of 153,746 people.
