The town of North Providence, R.I. has a new ban on smoking in parks and playgrounds after the town council unanimously approved the proposal at its most recent meeting. It’s an expansion of the town’s current ban, which was enacted in 1997, but only banned smoking within 15 feet of recreational areas, as well as in seating areas of sports facilities, the town’s playground and its lone beach. The new ban not only bans smoking throughout parks but within 25 feet of any park, playground or public event that will be attended primarily by families, children or senior citizens. While the ban expands, the fines of up to $100 for violating it remains the same. North Providence is home to just over 32,000 residents.
