As of June 1, anyone wishing to purchase cigars or other tobacco products in Plainville, Mass. will have to be at least 21-years-old, as the town’s board of health unanimously approved the increase during its meeting on Wednesday. Retailers will face fines of $100 for a first time offense, $200 for a second offense and $300 for a third offense, which also comes with a hearing before the board of health and possible suspension or revocation of their license to sell tobacco, according to The Sun Chronicle. More than 100 cities and towns have raised the minimum age to purchase tobacco products in Massachusetts and several more have announced plans to pursue an increase. There is also a bill in the state legislature that would raise the age statewide. Plainville is located approximately 40 miles south east of Boston, along the border with Rhode Island.
