An attempt to increase taxes on tobacco in Nebraska has died in committee. LB1013, which would have increased taxes on cigars from 20 to 31 percent of the wholesale price, did not survive a Revenue Committee vote, failing to pass 2-6. A cigar with a suggested retail price of $9.50 likely retails for around $11.40 in Nebraska, after LB1013, that likely would have been $12.45. It would have also raised the taxes on cigarettes from $1.50 to $3.63 per pack. The bill was proposed by Sen. Mike Gloor, I-Grand Island. This is the third time Gloor has proposed a tobacco tax increase and the third time it has failed.
