New National Harbor Casino Won’t Get Cigar Language

Last week, a Maryland House Economic Matters Committee axed plans for a cigar bar at the new MGM casino and resort in National Harbor, located in Prince George County, Md. The casino was lobbying for language that would have allowed for it to install a cigar lounge. Under state law, casinos that serve alcohol must remain smoke-free; those that don’t serve alcohol can allow smoking. MGM wanted both. Other businesses that have liquor licenses joined anti-smoking groups in opposition claiming the loophole was unfair. National Harbor is located on the Potomac River just south of Washington D.C. The area is less than two square-miles, but is home to a variety of hotels and entertainment options. The $1.3 billion casino project is expected to open later this year.
