The growing Tobacco 21 movement in Kansas has claimed another city, as the Iola City Council passed the increase at Tuesday’s meeting. While the new law makes it illegal for a person under 21 to purchase tobacco, it doesn’t make it illegal for them to possess or use tobacco products, creating a significant loophole in the law when it goes into effect on June 1. Kansas now has three cities that have increased the tobacco purchase age, as Iola joins Kansas City and Olathe. Iola is located 100 miles southwest of Kansas City and has a population of just over 5,600 residents.
