At today’s Chicago City Council meeting, Mayor Rahm Emanuel is expected to announce that he wants to raise the minimum age to purchase tobacco products, electronic cigarettes and vaping products from 18 to 21 years old, something that would put Chicago on par with a growing number of large American cities, including New York City, Boston, Cleveland and Kansas City. It’s the latest anti-tobacco proposal from the mayor, who just last week proposed a 90 cent tax increase on premium cigars, as well as increases on roll-your-own tobacco and smokeless tobacco, as part of his plan to generate $6 million to fund a program that seeks to help incoming freshmen transition to high school. The city council meeting begins at 10 am.
