Being able to enjoy a cigar in a city park came to a quick end last night, as the Glen Ellyn Park District Board of Commissioners voted to make it illegal as its meeting on Tuesday night. The village’s board didn’t just single out cigars and tobacco products however, as they also included the use of electronic cigarettes and similar devices in the ban, which will carry fines between $100 and $250 for violators once the ban goes into effect in spring 2016 following the installation of signage and a community education program. The ordinance, which proclaims that “the board of commissioners has determined that it is in the best interests of the health, safety and welfare of park district residents to prohibit smoking and the use of tobacco products and promote safe and uncontaminated air,” came about because of the work of a group called Reality Illinois, which is described as a statewide anti-tobacco movement created by high school students in a report from MySuburbanLife.com.
