With New Orleans clearing the way for smoking bans in bars and clubs, Lafayette, La. has announced that it will put a similar proposal to its city-parish leaders on May 5. The proposal was created by Council Chairman Kenneth Boudreaux, Grammy-winning entertainer Chubby Carrier and Tobacco-Free Living. Carrier has become an advocate of smoke-free spaces after his father died of a smoking-related illness. The ordinance would ban smoked tobacco products as well as the use of electronic cigarettes in bars and clubs both in Lafayette as well as in unincorporated parts of Lafayette Parish. Lafayette is home to nearly 125,000 people, making it the fourth-largest city in Louisiana, while Lafayette Parish is home to just over 221,000 people. It is located about 130 miles west of New Orleans.
