Sulphur, La. Snuffs Out Smoking in Bars, Casinos and Parks

Following in the footsteps of a ban recently passed in New Orleans, the city of Sulphur. has passed a smoking ban that will take the ashtrays out of bars and casinos in the southwestern Louisiana city. The ban also extends to parks where children frequent. The city’s smoke free air ordinance was amended with a unanimous vote during Monday’s city council meeting to include bars and casinos, as well as include electronic cigarettes and vaping devices. The new law requires that smokes must be at least 25 feet away from the main entrance to a building and five feet away from any other entrances. The law states smokers must be 25 feet away from the main entrance of the building and five feet away from the secondary entrance. The changes will go into effect in 30 days but a 60 day grace period has been granted to give businesses time to apply for variances. Enforcement will be handled by the city’s police department, according to KPLC-TV. Sulphur is located about 200 miles west of New Orleans near the Texas border and has a population of just over 20,000 residents.
