Mayor Anna Peterson of Salem, Ore. is pushing for a new law that would allow businesses to designate the sidewalks surrounding their property to be smoke free. According to Peterson, the move comes after requests from Salem Hospital and William University. Only one city councilor voted against a proposal to draft legislation for the proposed rule, so it’s expected to be subjected to a public hearing and formal vote at some point in the future. City Councilor Diana Dickey said she will submit another proposal regarding banning smoking in city parks. Earlier this year, the Oregon Parks and Recreation Commission passed measures to ban smoking at parks and beaches within the state. Those laws will take effect next year. Salem is the capital of Oregon, located in both Marion and Polk Counties. It has a metro area of over 400,000.
