Last night, the Covington City Council voted unanimously for an expansion of the Louisiana city’s smoking ban. The revised rule will allow the city to ban smoking at parks and other outdoor public areas at its discretion. Under the new rule, the mayor will now be able to ban smoking at these places without having to seek further approval from the City Council. Its current mayor, Mike Cooper, said he is likely to designate recreation areas as smoke free zones. It will establish a 25-foot smoke-free permitter around the entrance of any public building, as well as ban smoking in city vehicles. Covington is located in St. Tammany parish in the eastern part of the state. It has a population under 10,000.
