While the State of New Jersey passed a smoking ban dealing with public parks and beaches, the borough of Norwood is eying a ban of its own that would extend to sidewalks and wooded areas. Earlier this week, the council recommended a Board of Health subcommittee to review a proposed ordinance before submitting a recommendation. Fines would be set as high as $200. The Council is divided on the issue regarding whether the banning of smoking on sidewalks and wooded areas extends too far. Nortwood is located in in Bergen County in the northwestern part of the state. The borough of around 5,000 is located less than two miles from the New York border. In roughly the last month, Emerson and Harrington Park, both in Bergen County, have passed smoking bans of their own.
