The Delaware coast could soon add another smoke-free area, as Lewes Mayor Ted Becker has indicated that he and other city leaders are looking at a beach smoking ban, possibly by the end of summer. Becker told DelmarvaNow.com that “it’s a matter of cleanliness, and protecting the environment.” The city currently has a smoking ban for its parks, but did not include its beaches in the ordinance. Rehoboth Beach, which neighbors Lewes to the southeast, passed a beach and boardwalk smoking ban in March. Lewes is home to just under 3,000 residents and is situated in in eastern Sussex County.
