A park smoking and tobacco ban could be coming to Pitt County, N.C., as the Board of Health has drafted a preliminary ordinance that will be reviewed and discussed by board members in advance of their August meeting. Should it be approved by the board, it will then be presented to the Pitt County Board of Commissioners. The city council of Greenville, which is the largest city in the county, gave their support of the proposal at their meeting on Monday night, helping the proposal gain traction after the Greenville Parks and Recreation Department voted to support the proposal in May. WNCT-TV, who obtained a copy of the proposal, reported that the ban would include all tobacco products as well as e-cigarettes at all county parks. Several municipalities in North Carolina have already banned smoking in parks, including Spencer, Saluda, Salisbury and Hickory, as well as Sampson County.
