Officials in Bridgeport, Conn. rejected a smoking ban proposal at parks and other outdoor public areas on various grounds. While the matter never went to a formal vote, various City Council members rejected advances from an anti-smoking group. One member mentioned that smokers pay for parks, another suggested that it was not the responsibility of the government to keep children away from tobacco and another suggested that designated smoking areas would be required for their vote. Bridgeport is part of the greater New York City metropolitan area. It is located in the southern portion of the state with a population around 150,000 and a metro area just shy of one million.
