The small town of West Pelzer, S.C., home to approximately 879 residents, appears headed towards passing a smoking ban as the town council gave a proposal its first reading at their Monday, May 12 meeting and provided their unanimous support for its passage. According to TheJournalOnline.com, the proposal would ban smoking in all workplaces within city limits, as well as within 10 feet of any opening or ventilation system to a workplace. In addition to standard tobacco products, the ban would also include electronic cigarettes. Fines for violating the ban would run $100 for both the violator and the owner of a business for failing to enforce the ordinance on their property, with the proprietor running the risk of losing their business license. The proposal will receive its second reading at the council’s next meeting in June. West Pelzer is located approximately 100 miles northwest of Charleston, in the northwestern corner of the state.
