The days of being able to light up on the beach and boardwalk of Spring Lake, N.J. are a thing of the past, as the Spring Lake Borough Council voted unanimously to expand the current ban on smoking to include the entire waterfront area. The move comes just about a week after neighboring Belmar passed a similar measure, and according to a report on NJ.com was motivated by fears that smokers would come to Spring Lake to light up while enjoying the beach. Unlike bans passed in similar municipalities, the one passed in Spring Lake carries a serious penalty for violators, with fines ranging up to $2,000 and/or up to 90 days of community service. The council also decided against offering designated smoking areas, a move that did raise concerns about pushing smokers onto private property in the areas adjacent to the beach and boardwalk. Spring Lake is home to approximately 3,000 residents and is located 44 miles east of Trenton.
