The southern California city of Goleta could enact a smoking ban after it received its first reading at the city council’s May 6 meeting. The proposal seeks to ban smoking in public places such as restaurants and stores, as well as in recreational areas such as parks and hiking trails. The ordinance also includes language aimed to prevent access to tobacco products by those under 18 years of age, including limiting sales of e-cigarettes and similar devices to those over 18, preventing minors from working at stores that sold those products and restricting retailers to be more than 1,000 feet from schools. The Goleta City Council’s next meeting is scheduled for May 20. Goleta is home to approximately 30,000 people and is located 10 miles west of Santa Barbara.
