The Lewiston City Council voted 5-2 in favor of a half-hearted measure to try to remove smoking from some of the city’s outdoor spaces. The new law in the state’s ninth largest city is voluntary, meaning there will be no penalties for violating the smoking ban. Signs will be posted by the city’s health department in parks asking for people to not smoke in public areas. It remains unknown if there is enough support to attach actual penalties to a smoking ordinance. Lewiston is located in northern Idaho, separated from the state of Washington by the Snake River. It has a population over 60,000.
