Earlier this week, the Cape Elizabeth Town Council banned smoking in Fort Williams Park, ahead of the tourist season. The ban which covers tobacco products, including smokeless tobacco and e-cigarettes, will not affect grills. Council members stressed it was largely due to littler and health concerns. The new law will go into effect within 30 days of its passage, April 14, and carries a fine of $250. Fort Williams Park is a 90-acre park that includes the former Fort Williams and the Portland Head Light, a 223-year-old light house commissioned by George Washington. Cape Elizabeth has less than 10,000 residents. It is a popular tourists destination to its location in south Maine along the Eastern seaboard.
