Time has run out on a proposal to raise the minimum age to purchase tobacco products in Massachusetts. While the state senate approved the proposal in late April, the state house wasn’t able to bring it to a vote before the end of the formal session on July 31. House Speaker Robert DeLeo (D-Winthrop) told WWLP-TV that there was disagreement among state representatives as to the merits of the increase, meaning it likely wouldn’t have passed had it been brought to a vote. That leaves California and Hawaii as the only two states to have passed statewide tobacco purchase age increases. More than 130 towns and cities across Massachusetts have increased the minimum age to purchase tobacco.
