The state of Maine has its first city that will be raising the minimum age to purchase tobacco products to 21, as the Portland City Council voted unanimously on Monday night in favor of the increase. The new law goes into effect in 30 days. While several people spoke to the council in favor of the increase, no one spoke in opposition to it, though a letter was sent that had been signed by several convenience store operators, according to the Portland Press Herald. Portland is the most populous city in Maine with a 2015 population estimate of 66,881 residents.
