Said to have gotten their inspiration from Gov. Chris Christie’s January veto of an increase to the minimum age to purchase tobacco products to 21, leaders in Maplewood Township, N.J. decided to do it on their own this week, passing an increase that will go into effect this summer. Mayor Vic DeLuca said that Christie “failed in his responsibility” to protect young people during the June 8 township council meeting, creating a push to raise the minimum purchase age in the township that was approved on Wednesday. The increase goes into effect on Aug. 17 according to a report from NJ.com and applies to all forms of tobacco and nicotine products. Maplewood Township is located approximately five miles west of Newark and has an estimated population of just over 24,000 people.
