The beaches and boardwalk of Belmar, N.J. are the target of a new smoking ban after Mayor Matt Doherty promised a Borough Council vote on the issue at its March 18 meeting. The move would eliminate the area’s several smoking areas that are currently in place, which would help the borough “catch up” with neighboring beaches that have already gone smoke free. The mayor also cited a reduction in litter with the ban, as well as easing enforcement of smoking regulations by eliminating what he referred to as “gray areas” near where people are currently allowed to smoke. If approved, the ban would be in place in time for the busy summer tourist season, according to Asbury Park Press. Belmar, N.J. is home to just under 6,000 residents.
