A bill seeking to ban all smoking in California state parks and beaches has cleared the state senate, passing by a 25-11 vote on Tuesday. SB 1333 was introduced by Sen. Marty Block (D-San Diego) and seeks to punish those who use or dispose of tobacco products, electronic cigarettes and medical marijuana in those areas with a $250 fine. The bill has already garnered the support of the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network, the American Lung Association in California and Sierra Club California, and comes just weeks after Gov. Jerry Brown signed several anti-tobacco bills, including one that will raise the minimum age to purchase tobacco products to 21-years-old as of June 9. The bill now heads to the state Assembly for its consideration. Should it pass, it will affect some 280 areas throughout the state at an estimated cost of $1.1 million to install signage in those areas.
