City leaders in Port Orange, Fla. tried their best to ban smoking in city parks, but a state law prohibiting cities from enacting such bans trumped those efforts and smokers will once again be able to light up. As a result, the city will have to take down signage that indicated smoking was banned, though city administrators have said they will replace them with signs they hope will highly discourage smoking, according to a report in the Daytona Beach News-Journal. Mayor Allen Green was quoted as saying he wants city staff to be more attentive to smokers in parks and try and “get them for littering” should they discard of something on the ground and not in a proper receptacle. Port Orange, Fla. is home to just over 57,000 residents and is located approximately 55 miles northeast of Orlando.
