Hearing complaints that the Cathedral Square area in downtown Syracuse, N.Y. is becoming covered in cigarette butts, the city council is expected to begin work looking at the feasibility of an ordinance that would ban outdoor smoking in the neighborhood. The area, which is just under four square blocks, includes the Everson Museum, Columbus Circle, the Hotel Syracuse and the John H. Mulroy Civic Center. No legislation has been introduced as of yet, but Syracuse.com reports that there is a draft of an ordinance in circulation that Common Councilors Khalid Bey and Bob Dougherty have asked city lawyers to review. Bey said he will not introduce the proposal until receiving the lawyers’ input, which he expects to have in the next two weeks. A vote could happen on the ordinance before the end of March.
