The small oceanside borough of Sea Girt, N.J. could soon consider a ban on smoking on the beach, as Councilman Michael Mulroy told StarNewsGroup.com that he is planning to propose a beach-area smoking ban before the borough council at their next meeting on Wednesday, March 12, at 7:30 p.m. Mulroy, who is also the beach committee chair, told the council at their recent meeting that he has been receiving complaints about smoking on the beach, and that he thinks it’s time for the borough to join with other beaches in banning smoking as part of an effort to ensure they remain “clean, family-friendly fun.” He also expressed his opposition to creating designated smoking areas, saying that a smoking ban on the beach is a quality of life issue. The initial mention of the proposal was met with mixed reaction from the six member council, with questions about enforcement and personal liberties being raised. Sea Girt is home to approximately 1,800 residents and is located approximately 45 miles east of Trenton.
