This week, Dominican Republic-based Suriel Cigars began shipping cigars to U.S. retailers for the first time. Suriel debuted in the Dominican market in October 2014 with two cigars: Robusto Day & Night and Toro Majestuoso. Both cigars are made by Hendrik Kelner Jr.’s Kelner Boutique Factory and are coming to the U.S., but the American market is receiving a different version of Toro Majestuoso. It’s revamped version of the original Toro Majestuoso. Both versions use the same Cuban-seed Brazilian-grown wrapper, but the new cigar has a completely different filler blend according to the company’s founder Uriel Suriel. Underneath is a Dominican binder from Cotuí that’s grown by Monika Kelner, the sister of Kelner Jr. As for the filler, there’s Dominican HVA from Leo Reyes, Nicaraguan tobacco from Condega, Peruvian pelo de oro and Pennsylvania “8 percent.” The tobacco, which has an extremely higher nicotine content of 8 percent, has found its way into ...
