There are no tobacconists in American Canyon, Calif.—and it appears it will stay that way, legally. On Tuesday, the American Canyon city council voted unanimously to prohibit tobacco stores from being allowed into the city. The measure will still allow for non-tobacco speciality stores. Any store under 10,000-square-feet that has less than 50 percent or more of its transactions involving tobacco or tobacco-related products would be allowed. Any store over 10,000-square-feet will be permitted to designate up to 5 percent of its square-footage to the display and merchandising of tobacco and tobacco-related products including e-cigarettes. Before it becomes law the proposed measure will have to pass a second vote. The next city council meeting is scheduled for Jan. 26. American Canyon is located in Napa County, northeast of San Francisco. It has a population around 20,000.
