The majority of parks in the suburban city of Wilmington, Ill. will be going tobacco free after the city council unanimously approved an ordinance at its Dec. 15 meeting. The push for the change came from a pair of high school students who are part of a group called Reality Illinois, an anti-tobacco campaign created by the Illinois Department of Public Health and local health departments that seeks to push its agenda through policy changes and the enactment of new anti-smoking legislation, according to a report from The Herald-News. While most of the city’s parks will become tobacco free, smokers are getting a bit of a reprieve via designated smoking areas within two parks of the Wilmington Island Park District. Wilmington is located approximately 50 miles southwest of Chicago and has a population of just over 5,700 people.
