The city-by-city march to raise the minimum age to purchase tobacco products to 21 in Massachusetts took another step forward this week, as the Norwell Board of Health approved the increase at its meeting on Monday. The change will go into effect on March 31, 2016 and went unopposed from residents and businesses, according to Wicked Local Norwell. In addition to increasing the minimum age to purchase tobacco products, the board passed a proposal that will remove all tobacco products from pharmacies, which extends to grocery stores and other retailers that have a pharmacy. The sale of flavored tobacco has also been banned at all retailers within the city. One change that did not get voted on was to place a cap on the number of tobacco retailers in the city. Norwell is located approximately 25 miles southeast of Boston and is home to just over 10,000 residents.
