Despite vehement opposition from Mayor Danny Jones who called it unenforceable, the Charleston City Council passed a parks smoking ban at its meeting on Monday night. Parks and Recreation Committee Chair Susie Salisbury told the council that the ban should address two issues facing city parks: cigarette litter and protecting children from secondhand smoke, according to 580 WCHS. The ban goes into effect immediately, though signage will be put up in stages across the city’s seven parks and related facilities. Charleston is capitol and largest city in West Virginia, with a population of nearly 51,000 residents.
