Today, a formal proposal to raise the minimum age to purchase tobacco from 18 to 21 was introduced in San Francisco. Supervisors Scott Wiener and Eric Mar co-authored the proposal. The move comes nearly a year after the Board of Supervisors, similar to a city council, passed a measure that would limit the amount of tobacco sales permits that would be allowed in the city. There have been other efforts to raise the minimum age to purchase tobacco in California, including recent measures to raise the age statewide, a proposal that has stalled on multiple occasions.
