To ring in 2016, Cleveland County, Okla. will bring an end to smoking on county property after commissioners approved passage of the Cleveland County Smoking Policy at their meeting on Monday. While specifics of the ban have not been publicized, a community health improvement plan drafted in 2012 has called for a multi-faceted approach to reduce smoking in the county of nearly 270,000 residents, which includes the city of Norman as well as the University of Oklahoma. A report in The Moore American identified it as primarily a ban on smoking around county buildings, but also noted that it applied to “county property” without any qualifiers. The ban goes into effect on Jan. 1, 2016.
