The small seaside city of Rehoboth Beach, Del. has begun the process of crafting a new smoking ban proposal and plans to have it in front of the city commissioners in March. Home to just over 1,300 year-round residents, the city gets a significant amount of tourism in the summer months, though Mayor Sam Cooper told WDEL.com that he didn’t think the year-round ban would hurt tourism. The city swells to as many as 25,000 residents during the warmer months. The recently revised  smoking ban proposal would create a smoke free area that would encompass the city’s boardwalk, bandstand, city parks and the majority of the city’s beach. Commissioner Stan Mills, who is leading the drafting of the new proposal, said that there will be a certain number of designated smoking areas on the beach to provide some spaces for those who wish to light up. In January, Cooper said he was finding loopholes in an initial draft of the proposal and didn’t think it would be feasible, spurring the creation of a this new proposal. The revised proposal has received the endorsement of the Rehoboth Beach-Dewey Beach Chamber of Commerce and the American Lung Association.
