Davis, Calif. has joined the fight to make it harder for smokers to light up in public as the city council unanimously approved a ban on smoking in city parks and recreation areas as well as the city’s downtown plaza. At its meeting on Tuesday, the council updated a 20-year-old ordinance that currently requires smokers to be at least 20 feet from eating areas and public entryways, as well other outdoor spaces. When it goes into effect, violators will be subject to a $50 fine for a first offense. Mayor Dan Wolk told the Sacramento Bee that the city is now focusing on banning smoking in multi-family residential units. Davis is located 15 miles west of Sacramento, with a 2013 population estimate of 66,205 residents.
