On Nov. 3, the citizens of Farmington, Mo. will decide on whether smoking will be banned in and around most businesses. The Farmington City Council voted 5-3 in favor of putting the measure on the ballot after months of debate. Smoking will be banned inside most private businesses and within 15 feet of any entrances. Smoking is also banned in all city-owned buildings and within 25 feet of entrances. There are a variety of exemptions including those for cigar bars that do not prepare food, private clubs, smoking hotel rooms, private nursing homes and private residences. If approved, the new laws will go into effect Jan. 1, 2016. Farmington is located approximately 60 miles south of St. Louis and has a population of nearly 18,000 residents.
