At tonight’s Trenton City Council meeting, a proposal to ban smoking in all city parks and city-owned, leased or operated recreation areas will get its first reading. It’s the second time the proposal has come up in just over two years, with a similar idea deferred in February 2013 so that the city could figure out how it could be enforced. The current proposal calls for signage to be installed at the affected areas, as well as fines for violators starting between $50 and $100 that would escalate to as high as $500 for repeat offenses, according to a report on NJ.com. The city’s health department would be tasked with enforcing the law should it pass. Trenton is the capitol city of New Jersey and has a population of nearly 85,000 residents.
