New Jersey is quickly becoming the next hotbed of cities seeking to raise the minimum age to purchase tobacco and nicotine delivery products to 21, as the Rutherford Borough Council will be taking the idea up at its July 13 meeting, according to NorthJersey.com. Eight other cities in the state have already passed similar increases, including Princeton, Englewood, East Rutherford, Teaneck, Bogota, Garfield, Highland Park and Sayreville. Earlier this week, North Plainfield joined Hackensack in rejecting a proposal to increase the minimum age to purchase tobacco products, but did agree to send a letter to the state legislature in support of a statewide increase. The New Jersey State Senate has already approved the increase, with the bill currently sitting in the Assembly. The current minimum age to purchase tobacco in New Jersey is 19-years-old. Rutherford is home to just over 18,000 residents and is located about 10 miles northeast of Newark.
