Bucking the growing trend of municipalities increasing the minimum age to purchase tobacco and nicotine delivery products, the North Plainfield Borough Council rejected a proposal to increase the minimum age to purchase tobacco from 19 to 21-years-old. The proposal came to light in mid-May, with the idea getting a favorable reception when it was introduced. However, at Monday’s meeting, it was voted down 4-2, though the council did approve a request to write a letter to the New Jersey Legislature in support of increasing the statewide minimum age. North Plainfield is located in Somerset County, about 25 miles southeast of Manhattan. It has a population of just over 20,000.
