Earlier this week, the Wayne County Board of Supervisors voted to prohibit the use of tobacco products and electronic cigarettes on county-owned and county-leased property. The ban also expands to county-owned vehicles, as well as private vehicles that are being used for a county purpose. Smoke-free zones of 25 feet within the entrances to county buildings are also being implemented, according to the Finger Lake Times. The proposal passed 12-3 at the board’s meeting on Tuesday, and will go into effect in just over two weeks. It isn’t a total ban, however, as smoking will still be allowed in private vehicles on county property, though the all of the doors and windows must be completely closed. Smokers can still light up on roads and rights-of-way, as well as in county parks, though not in pavilion areas. Fines for violators start at $200 and escalate to $1,000 for repeat offenses. Wayne County had a 2010 population estimate of 93,772 residents and is located on the southern shore of Lake Ontario.
