A Greenfield, Mass. city councilman hoping to reverse the upcoming increase in the minimum age to purchase tobacco products fell short in his effort, with the council voting 7-4 Wednesday night against it. At-large Councilor Isaac Mass had proposed that the changes made by the Greenfield Board of Health in mid-March be repealed, which along with the age increase included a near total ban on the sale of flavored tobacco products and a cap on the number of tobacco retailers permitted in the city. Several councilors who voted against his proposal cited that not only did they want to keep the changes in place, they didn’t believe the council had the authority to override the board’s decision, according to The Recorder. The changes will continue to go into effect on July 1.
